A Recap of Women’s History Month 2023

Since 1987, the month of March has been proclaimed as Women’s History Month and throughout the years, women have been celebrated for their unique and valuable contributions to society. Over the years, women have made their mark in all industries, and our Caribbean women in tech are no different. WITC members have continued to make us proud in so many ways and we are happy to celebrate them and all of their accomplishments and activities during Women’s History Month in 2023.

On March 8th, International Women’s Day, our founder, Janique-ka John participated in a virtual panel with Caribbean Women in ICT facilitated by the UN and streamed live by UN Women, UWITV and UN Barbados and OECS on Facebook.

During the month, Loop News connected with WITC to get our views on how technology can be used to achieve gender equality and empower women in the Caribbean. We thank our member, Gillian Parague, for participating in the interview and sharing her thoughts on this relevant topic!

Women in Tech Caribbean member and founder of The Epicentrum, Kimberley Demagny created the Epicentrum conference as a forum “...to continue to bridge the gap between culture and tech [and] to uplift our Caribbean Creatives Economy…”. The conference was held on March 22-23, and brought thought leaders and professionals together to discuss trends, technology impacts and much more. We are proud of Kimberley for her continuous effort towards the advancement of the Caribbean digital economy.

Silicon Caribe founder and WITC member, Ingrid Riley, was a speaker at the Epicentrum conference where she presented on “Unveiling the Blindspot: Exploring the Trillion Dollar Global Female Economy for Caribbean Growth”. We celebrate Ingrid for always leading the way to empower Caribbean women in tech.

Two of our WITC members were nominated for the Caribbean Global Awards - 2023 edition. Rianna Patterson, founder of the Dominica Dementia Foundation was nominated for Community Health Service Development, and Janique-ka John was nominated for breaking the glass ceiling in software technology and founding the Women in Tech Caribbean Community. We are very proud of our members who continue to break barriers and lead by example, and we wish them the best!

Our members have also been succeeding in other areas, sharing their acceptance into university programs, hosting workshops in their communities and creating space for other Caribbean women in tech voices to be heard. We celebrate our members for leading the charge to increase visibility of our Caribbean women in tech and look forward to all that they will accomplish. Although Women’s History Month is over, our hard work continues!
